Ticket sales have always been one area of the music industry that did not feel the slump in sales during a recession, but analysts are questioning whether our current economic woes may change that. During LiveNation’s recent 3rd Quarter earnings call, chief executive Michael Rapino worried that, while ticket sales have not dropped yet, this current recession could affect sales in the coming months. Analysts seem to agree. Alan Gould, a media and entertainment analyst at Natixis Bleichroeder, indicated that this recession should last longer and be worse than any we have seen in the twenty years that the industry has been analyzed. He worries that overall reduced consumer spending along with increased competition from Ticketmaster may cause problems. Jim Boyle at CL King & Associates, also lowered expectations, stating “if the fan has less and less discretionary money or just wants to hunker down to survive the seeming storm, some tickets don’t get bought next year.”
