The majors enjoyed a major victory in a court case involving collusion and price fixing, according to a report that surfaced November 12th. The lawsuit alleged that the major labels colluded to fix the prices of digital tracks, but the federal judge dismissed the suit due to a lack of evidence. The investigation into the alleged price fixing began back in 2006 and was conducted by both the US Department of Justice and New York Attorney General’s office.
Whether or not these allegations are true, artists are finding that their careers can often be more successful without the majors’ help. The digital age has opened up an array of tools and services for artists to utilize to directly interface with the market. Innovations in recording allow artists to produce their own albums, social networks and online discovery tools provide marketing solutions, and digital distributors place independent records in online stores. The digital age has even reached the live entertainment industry, with the release of ArtistForce.com.
